Bischer graduates SVSU with honors

UNIVERSITY CENTER - An award-winning student from Harbor Beach graduated from Saginaw Valley State University Friday, Dec. 14. Huron County’s McKenna Bischer completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing, graduating summa cum laude.

An active student and volunteer, Bischer was involved with a number of organizations, including the Midwest Nursing Research Society, the honor society Alpha Chi, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Student Nurses’ Association. While a student, she worked for SVSU’s Campus Recreation program, and she already has secured a job as a nurse at Saginaw’s Covenant HealthCare.

“I really liked the closeness of everybody at SVSU,” Bischer said, adding that she especially appreciated her program. “You go through the whole program with the same 64 students. You get to know them all, so it’s like a family.”

Starting this January, Bischer will work at Covenant’s surgical intensive care unit, where she will manage the care for critically unstable postoperative patients. The Harbor Beach native will spend the first three months training with a nurse, and once Bischer passes her board exams, she will begin working on her own.

“It will be a challenging job,” Bischer said, “but it’s what I’ve been working hard toward. I’m really excited.”
