BAD AXE - The City of Bad Axe began the new year by voting to approve a Charitable Gaming License for the Huron County Hockey Association for a 50/50 Raffle at its Fish Fry.

During the Mayor & Council Member comments, of the Tuesday, January 4, regular meeting, Council Member Nicholas Rochefort asked if gasoline purchases for vehicles were being tracked. City Manager Dale VanDeVusse responded affirmatively saying items such as the date, amount, driver are noted.

Council Member Kathleen Particka said someone told her street lamps at the corner of North Hanselman and East Huron were out.

VanDeVusse noted the light fixtures are at a firm that is trying to retrofit them for LED (light emitting diode) bulbs.

Mayor James Hicks relayed to Council Members that getting a street lamp's number from the pole greatly helps if there's a problem or concern.

Particka also commented that "Sterling Heights Magazine" mentioned the filming of some scenes for "This Must Be The Place," in Bad Axe.

In the online version of the magazine, at www.sterling-heights.net, the article reports some scenes for the upcoming movie were filmed at a Sterling Heights' condominium complex along with other scenes in Bad Axe.

Council Member Richard Peterson suggested Council suspend videotaping meetings until technical difficulties are effected. VanDeVusse said the City is working with Comcast to resolve the situation.

Council Member William C. Cleland asked if the City could implement a Christmas Tree recycling program. City Manager Dale VanDeVusse said he would talk to Department of Public Works Director Scott Boshart.

VanDeVusse advised council, "Treatment Plant Operator Magazine Magazine" wrote a very positive article about the City's wastewater treatment plant, saying that the facility has reduced energy use and costs.

An overview of the January 2011 article, at www.tpomag.com, states: "The staff in Bad Axe, Mich., collaborated in design of a plant upgrade and later made improvements that cut energy usage and drove down costs."

The City Council also approved the paying of Bills in the amount of $113,127.26, upon a roll call vote. Council also approved the December 20, 2010 minutes.

Prior to the Regular Meeting, a Special Meeting was conducted to hear input on the Recreation Plan for the City of Bad Axe although there was none.

According to the City's website, the City developed the plan to serve as a guide to improve recreation facilities and develop new recreational opportunities.

The document forms the basis to guide policy for implementation of improvements and new initiatives to meet the recreational goals and interests of the Bad Axe community.

Present for the meetings were: Mayor James Hicks, Mayor Pro-Tem & Council Member David M. Rapson, Council Members William C. Cleland, Kathleen Particka, Richard Peterson, Nicholas Rochefort, City Manager Dale VanDeVusse and Deputy Clerk Bridget Glasgow.

Council Member James H. Hall and Clerk Kay Goebel were absent.

The next City of Bad Axe Regular Meeting is slated for Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bad Axe City Hall, 300 E. Huron Ave.
